Leadership and Self Deception [Book Review]

I read a lot of non-fiction and in pondering what books have helped me to be a better father this is the first one that came to my mind.

leadership and self deception for dads and parentsThe first thing you need to know is that the ideas in this book are taught in a story or fable that makes it easy to understand how it effects us in all arenas of our life. If you generally don't like business books or non-fiction you may find this is much easier to get through.

The book addresses how we deceive ourselves in order to justify our own actions. Self-deception leads to self-justification and it spirals into a nasty circle that puts us further and further out of touch with reality, closing us off from others around us. If you spend a lot of time in self-help literature most of these principles won't be new to you but it will give you a vocabulary to talk about it.

As fathers we are good at self-deception. It is much easier to accept that we are right all the time because we are the dad and because we say so. It takes very little to begin to distance ourselves from our children. Take this a step further and consider how we can apply it to our relationships with our spouse and others that are close to us.

The book is widely available in digital, audio, and print editions.
